Populations
The following are all native populations in the boreal forest
- Bobcats- bobcats have short tails and are medium sized wildcats that live in many places around the world including in boreal forests. bobcats eat snow shoe hares, deer, and some rodents all of these animals are native to the boreal forest. There are approximately 725,000 to 1,020,000 bobcats in the wild and many live in the boreal forest since they enjoy wooded areas. The bobcat has adapted to the well to the environment of the boreal forest, the temperature is pretty low and the bobcats have thick fur so that they can survive the cold.
- American Black Bear- Black Bears have thick black coats that are great for the cold temperatures of the forest. these bears are omnivores they eat fish, insects, nuts, etc. and since there are almost 32,000 species of bugs the boreal forests are good places for black bears to live. there are and estimated 600,000 black bears in north America many of them residing in the boreal forests, they enjoy woody areas and that's why they love the forest.
- Bald Eagles- Bald eagles have white head feathers and brown body feathers with long sharp talons. there diet consist of small birds, rodents, and fish there are many rivers and a large population of fish so they are able to prosper in the boreal forests. they like to live near large bodies of water primarily in Canada where there are large forests. there are a total of 70,000 bald eagles in north America (including Canada and mexico). fun fact- bald eagles can have between 1-3 eggs at a time and there mating season is between late September to early april.
- Forest tent caterpillar- forest tent caterpillars enjoy eating native plants in the boreal forest. they destroy many of the plants because they eat there leafs and are able to reproduce quickly and the plants don't have enough time to regrow there leafs and they become unhealthy and die. these organisms are destroying many plants and they are causing harm to the boreal forests. they can have between 100-350 babies at a time and those babies will then devower whatever plant they are laid on. there are people trying to regulate this species and try to control them they primarily are located in Canada and the united states but, they enjoy any place that has hardwood.
- orange Birch Bolete Mushroom- these organisms are decomposers, they break down material and return nutrients to the soil, it makes the soil richer and it helps support and fertilize many plants. these fungi can grow almost anywhere as long is there a plant or an animal dying then it can grow. these mushroom support detritivores in this biome and they are also the clean up crew of the environment since they take care of the dead organisms.
